After 17 years, Stanford DARE fellowship to close: Is compliance with federal law coming at too high a cost?

Stanford University will close its Diversifying Academia, Recruiting Excellence (DARE) Doctoral Fellowship after 17 years, citing reduced funding and compliance with the 2023 US Supreme Court ruling against race-based affirmative action. The fellowship, which supported 374 doctoral students from underrepresented backgrounds, will be replaced by a new graduate programme in Autumn 2026. According to The Stanford Daily, current and former fellows expressed disappointment, while University officials emphasised plans to maintain mentorship and support for future scholars.
